Vegas Adventure oldest attractions: the off-Strip, Wild West-worthy natural landscapes and dry desert fresh air that are ripe for exhilarating gonzo adventures. Summer is the perfect time to explore the newest ways to see Las Vegas's BY RICK LAX L as Vegas is an indoors town—starting with the casinos, which go to great expense to re-create the outside inside. Paris Las Vegas painted trompe l'oeil clouds on its ceiling, Venetian built a navigable waterway in its Grand Canal Shoppes, and Caesars Palace engineered its Forum Shops' lights to simulate sunset. The theory is, why look at real clouds or sunsets when you could be gambling, shopping, and dining? Our city's best-kept secret: You can venture out. The magazine National Geographic Adventure named Las Vegas its number-one place to live and play in recent years, thanks to outdoor adventure opportunities such as Valley of Fire ATV tours, horseback-riding trails in Mt. Charleston, and Grand Canyon white-water- rafting expeditions. These adrenaline-pumping excursions are closer to the Strip than you'd think, and most offer pickup and drop-off trans- portation for those visiting the city. Here, we present four fun new ways—skydiving, bike motocross, zip-lining, and race car-driving— to get out there and experience the combined thrill of Sin City and the great outdoors. 118 vegasmagazine.com photography by kelly corcoran
