When the touring produc- tion of Broadway's Beauty and the Beast rolls onto the Smith Center's Reynolds Hall stage in April, audi- ences will experience a dazzler of a show that impresses visually as much as it does musically. Much of the eye candy comes courtesy of the show's original costume designer, Ann Hould-Ward, who took home a Tony Award in 1994 for crafting the production's ensembles—a beast of a process that spanned more than a year from the initial stage of researching clothing from the 1700s, when fairytales were first written down, to opening night. More than 20 years after the show's Broadway premiere, the costumes have been slightly streamlined to survive the harshness of touring but continue to inspire awe in even their own creator. "I must admit," Hould-Ward remarks, "I wait to see the reveal of Belle's yellow dress each time I see the show." April 8–17.
