BY MATT KELEMEN THE TACTILE TREATMENT every suite was outfitted with everything a spa aficionado could want. "The design brief was very to the point and exactly what he wanted," says Beale. "It was very clear to me what needed to be done." What would be done would involve eight personal spa suites, each containing a private dressing closet with illuminated drawers, Jacuzzi, dry sauna, steam shower and treatment area. There would be no locker room or shared wet and dry facilities. "He wanted it to be very exclusive," says Beale, W 74 WYNN hen Steve Wynn expressed his vision for the 1,068 square meters of space reserved at Encore Macau for Wynn Resorts' new- est spa, his direction to then-senior vice president of design Jerry Beale was suc- cinct: Every guest who visited the Spa at Encore Macau was to experience an exclusive, high-end environment in which now a senior vice president and managing director of Wilson Associates in his hometown of LA. "What I did was concentrate on making sure inside the room you had everything you could ever dream of, and making it an atmo- sphere that made you feel like everything was there just for you." Beale's design also brought a masculine element to the space, balancing the feminine feel of Encore Macau's overall design. In going from general con- cepts to specific motifs, the idea of evoking the interior of a yacht entered the picture. "We wanted it to feel very fitted out," says Beale. "Everything was custom designed, all to give you a sense of ultimate luxury." Beale wanted to provide a tactile experience that begins in the eleva- tor lobby with an inch-thick sisal woven wall treatment. "It's an ancient material, but we're doing more unique things with it these days," he says. "It's great stuff, highly textured, and we've grazed the wall with lighting to pick up on that, so the texture is what you feel when you walk through the space." Hand-knotted carpeting and silk-shaded sconces bring fuchsia—a predominant color in Encore Macau's overall palette—into the spa, and rosewood is generously employed in baseboards, doorframes and crown moldings. Elaborately veneered rosewood doors with mother- of-pearl inlays open to the waiting area, where rough-hewn stone walls and glass vitrines displaying citrine quartz geodes are highlighted by fiber-optic spotlights. "Citrine has some powerful qualities according to some experts, so this is to get you in the mood," Beale explains. "Some people will not even know that it's there, but we feel that well- educated Chinese will know immediately the properties of citrine."
