TIME HONORED Desert Diamond THE WORLD'S FINEST WATCHMAKERS BEDAZZLE VEGAS WOMEN WITH SHIMMERING, ULTRAFEMININE GEOMETRIC TIMEPIECES. BY ROBERTA NAAS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF CRAWFORD L ike the lights of Las Vegas rising out of the Mojave, diamonds are born deep in the earth's crust before being transformed into objects of desire. Creating an opulent diamond watch is no easy task, but today's top makers are taking the concept to new heights, offering exquisite timepieces that double as works of art. It takes time to collect stones with the proper cuts, colors, and clarities to work together. (In many cases, the cuts used in watches are different from those used in jewelry.) The same is true of the setting, with myriad diamond settings employed to create flowing ribbons, scintillating flowers, and shimmering pavé dials. Often these watches demand hundreds of hours of patience by a master gem setter, tweaking the setting until it's perfect and carefully placing every diamond by hand. That delicate handiwork is what makes these watches so much more personal. "Sublime diamond watches are more than objects of desire; for our discerning clientele, they are tangible investments," says Wynn watch buyer Michael Ryan. "When the craftsmanship of a timepiece is rendered in exquisite diamonds, Las Vegans have a watch of exceptional style and quality that also becomes an instant heirloom."
