"Having three kids, you want to give as much as you can to the less fortunate, especially around the holidays," Victorino says. "I didn't come from a family that was poor; my parents had jobs. But we weren't wealthy by any means, and I always saw how they made the plight of the people around us a high priority. It was baked into our mind-sets, and it's something that my family has to continue, especially being as fortunate as we are." In its first act as a charitable organization, when Victorino was playing for the Philadelphia Phillies, the Shane Victorino Foundation spent close to $1 million to renovate the 100-year-old Boys & Girls Club in Philadelphia (the club was renamed the Shane Victorino Foundation Nicetown Boys & Girls Club). The foundation also hosts an annual golf event in Maui and runs the Flyin' Hawaiian All-Stars charity ticket program in Boston, which brings local children's groups to Fenway Park. But Las Vegas is home, and Victorino is humble enough to admit he's been strongly influenced by some other notably philanthropic athletes in the city. "Andre Agassi, for example, and the work that he's done for kids with his amazing schools and other programs has for sure been a huge inspiration," says Victorino, who frequently runs into the former tennis star at events and sees him around town from time to time. "I just hope that we can set an example for others, too, and help the less fortunate ones around us keep a winning spirit as best as possible. That would be the biggest victory."
