...WITHOUT WHOM THIS ISSUE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE NOVEMBER 2013 Adam Baer Former NPR producer and Travel + Leisure correspondent Adam Baer wrote about the Rotella Gallery and major leaguer Shane Victorino's charity work. How did you enjoy talking with Shane? Well, I'm a Yankee fan, which means I should have a strong adverse reaction to a Red Sox player. Shane, however, would be welcome in my house—although not a structure exactly built by Babe Ruth—anytime. What were your impressions of the gallery's work? The more I live, the more I'm taken with nature, and I'm always excited to learn of a unique artist who has devoted his or her career to the natural world. Lucky Wenzel Come January, you can see the work of Botswanan-born Lucky Wenzel, who shot our On the Town and veggie cocktails stories, at the Downtown gallery TastySpace. Do you have a guiding philosophy? We are part of shaping our history, defining our traditions, and inspiring our future. Telling that story through the lens is a blessing. Our On the Town subjects eat vegan at a steakhouse; could you? I am no vegetarian, What was it like shooting our Vegas Gives honorees? It was a privilege, and so inspiring to photograph this classy group of ladies, each of them so kind and generous with the time they are able to contribute. Our favorite moment was meeting the charming little lady Amanda, who is featured in the photo with Make-A-Wish's Linda Richardson. Amanda showed us that joy and wonder are contagious, and everyone left the shoot that day with a smile because of her unforgettable spirit. What about your own charity work? Jennifer volunteers her talents to an autism awareness nonprofit, and Ryan donates his work to local nonprofit theater and cultural organizations. 30 Andy Wang Our real estate writer, Andy Wang, has covered Las Vegas for more than a decade. What do you find compelling about Las Vegas's real estate market? The ability to buy a high-end condo in a luxury megadevelopment for $500 per square foot. You get world-class amenities for a fraction of the price of other cities on what I like to call the international spectacle circuit. And Summerlin is really becoming an epicenter of well-curated mixed-use development that proves Vegas chic isn't just about the Strip. What are your hidden gems in Vegas? The excellent collection of Asian restaurants on Spring Mountain Road rivals all the Asian cities I've visited. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIN FRANZMAN (WANG) Square Shooting Having worked closely together for nearly a decade, Jennifer Burkart and Ryan Reason, who shot our "Giving Back" feature, have found a creative balance that plays to each person's particular strengths. but I try to stay in the melody of the company I keep, so sure I would. Did you taste the veggie cocktail? The healthiest cocktail I've ever had is a neat The Balvenie DoubleWood. VEGASMAGAZINE.COM 030_V_FOB_Contribs_Nov13.indd 30 10/22/13 1:52 PM
