FROM THE PUBLISHER With Hedy Woodrow, SVP of retail at Wynn Las Vegas during a Rolex golf outing at the Wynn Golf Course. We celebrated the opening of the new Rolex Experience in Wynn later that evening. When they visit Las Vegas, they dine here, consume luxury goods and services, and soak in all we have to offer, but it's satisfying to give them a deeper perspective on our city. They expect the publisher of Vegas magazine to arrive with anecdotes, data, and a glass-half-full outlook on the state of affairs in Vegas; after all, these brands are heavily invested in our continued success. As I prepare for this trip, I'm armed with some tremendously invigorating intel. The Genting Group is erecting a $2 billion, 87-acre Asia-inspired project across from Wynn; Caesars Entertainment is building the world's largest observation wheel; the conversion of Mandalay's THEhotel into the Delano is under way, as is SLS on the north end of the Strip and Caesars' new boutique property in the middle. International flights into McCarran are growing by leaps and bounds, with higher passenger counts aboard British Airways, Korean Air, Copa Airlines, and Aeroméxico, as well as two new direct flights a week from Zurich Follow me on Twitter at aboard Edelweiss Air starting next spring. @josefvann and on International travelers stay longer and spend vegasmagazine.com. more. We are the epicenter for celeb-studded events like the iHeartRadio Music Festival and the Floyd Mayweather fights, as well as movie premieres and Britney Spears's two-year residency at Planet Hollywood. Senator Harry Reid has reinvigorated talks about a high-speed rail project, bringing in coveted Southern California tourists at up to 150 mph. The news is also solid for us Las Vegans. Our unemployment rate dropped from 12.1 percent to 9.8 percent within the last year, the fastest improvement among major cities nationwide. Home sales are soaring as values have risen 30 percent from this time last year. The most desirable local office real estate, the Hughes Center, was just sold to a major Wall Street firm for $347 million. In 2012, according to the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors, 178 $1 million-plus homes sold in the Greater Las Vegas area; with two months to go in 2013, this year's total is 275. Las Vegas is strong, and so is Vegas magazine. Enjoy.
