F ront Runners Judy Garland was over the rainbow in love; Mark Herron, reportedly, wasn't. Surrender, Dorothy IN NOVEMBER 1965, JUDY GARLAND MARRIED HUSBAND NUMBER FOUR, MARK HERRON, IN A HURRIED VEGAS WEDDING THAT PRESAGED A SHORT-LIVED MARRIAGE. L ike so many before and after them, Judy Garland and actor Mark Herron walked down the aisle of the Little Church of the West to exchange their vows, in a ceremony that marked the start of a marriage that would end in divorce within two years. The couple had flown in from Los Angeles with a small wedding party and headed to the Clark County Courthouse to pick up their marriage license shortly after midnight on November 14, 1965, stopping by the Sahara Hotel afterwards to change before going to the church. Asked after the doublering ceremony how she felt, Garland, wearing a floor-length gold gown with jewel inlays, responded with a twinkle, "I feel like Mrs. Herron!" It wasn't Garland's first time at the rodeo, however. The marriage to Herron was her fourth, not to mention her second in Las Vegas, where, in 1941, she had eloped with songwriter and bandleader David Rose, her first husband. Garland was a bit of a Vegas regular as a performer as well. Just a few months earlier, her concerts at the Thunderbird Hotel Showroom—featuring surefire favorites such as "Over the Rainbow"—had brought nightly crowds of 900 to their feet. The happy-for-the-moment couple was fêted into the wee hours of the morning at the Sahara, where Garland was due to begin another engagement later that month.
