MJ: There was Buster, who was 15 and being kept in a Summerlin yard in 120-degree heat with no shade. I knocked on the door and said, 'Hi, we're with Colossal Canine Care, and we'd like you to surrender your dog.' The woman said, 'I can't believe somebody wants a dog that old with liver issues. We're just waiting for her to die. You can have her.' Now she's at a new home and enjoying air-conditioning. A woman who loves older dogs adopted her not knowing if they had weeks or months together. She just loves each day with her girl. What is the process for adopting one of these big lugs? MJ: We help introduce the dog to your other dogs and kids. We want to reduce the likelihood that a dog comes back to us. For people willing to foster dogs until we find them a forever home, we also provide food and medical care. You just provide the love. What does Colossal Canine Care need the most these days? CJ: Vet care is costly, so we need financial support. MJ: Our dream is to go into a shelter and save an entire row of dogs on death row. What's it like in your house with your two mastiffs, a boxer, and various foster dogs? Do you two sleep on the floor? CJ: [Laughing] The dogs do race us for the bed to see who can sleep with us. It's a case of whoever can run upstairs the fastest, because not everyone can fit. It's hard for us not to adopt more dogs, but we need room in our house to foster dogs so we can find them homes. Leave us with one last happy, drooling story. MJ: Buddy, a St. Bernard, was spotted sitting outside a Smith's grocery store in North Las Vegas several times by an innocent bystander. At first she thought he was waiting for his owner, but he was abandoned. CJ: Every time this woman saw the dog, he looked a little thinner. So she called us, and we took him to the vet. He had a very mild hip problem that wasn't serious and was adopted immediately. He's the best dog. People don't want a dog with problems, but often the issues are minor or curable. What about Bernie and Sandy? MJ: We had a vet pull Sandy's bad teeth, and we put her on a healthy soft diet. She was adopted into a very loving home and died 30 days later. The win was she spent her last few weeks full of love instead of on some cold shelter floor. Somebody spent time making her feel like the most loved dog in the world—and that's the point. V Event: This Child Advocacy Recognition Gala honors the organization's volunteers and other supporters, with a silent auction raising money to help children in foster and alternative care.
