Haute Property NEWS, STARS, AND TRENDS IN REAL ESTATE Gansevoort is dipping its toes in Vegas, bringing a tony hotel like this one, whose heated pool overlooks Manhattan. Coastal Invasion VEGAS HAS LONG BEEN A MECCA FOR COOL, BUT A NEW WAVE OF CHIC, SOPHISTICATED HIPSTERS IS ATTRACTING SWANKY BOUTIQUE HOTELS FROM MIAMI, NEW YORK, AND LA. BY TONY ILLIA PHOTOGRAPHY BY MAGDA BIERNAT N ow that modern, sleek hotels have taken over where the themed megaresorts of yesteryear left off, it was only a matter of time before trendy boutique hotels from both coasts invaded Vegas. Bringing their signature brand of swank cool to the Strip, a trio of hip imports from Miami, New York, and LA are taking chic sophistication to the next level, with less bowling and bingo and a greater focus on killer restaurants, upscale nightlife, and stylish digs. For starters, Mandalay Bay's THEhotel is getting a touch of South Beach. The 10-year-old, 43-story property is being transformed into Delano Las Vegas (delanolasvegas.com), the modish brand's first US offshoot. The 1,100room hotel—all suites—will embrace Delano's laid-back style with Art Deco– inspired detailing, clean lines, and casual comfort. There will also be a rooftop bar, lounge, and balcony overlooking the Strip, plus a 14,000square-foot spa. Delano Las Vegas is aiming to become, like its South Beach progenitor, a cherished landmark and favorite hangout for latenight minglers, urban hipsters, and celebrities. Mandalay Bay owner MGM Resorts International will manage the hotel, scheduled to open in early 2014, through a licensing deal with Morgans Hotel Group, owner of Delano and Light Group, which has several hot spots inside Mandalay Bay. "The Delano brand provides a sophisticated experience that appeals to a growing market of international guests as well as business travelers," says Chuck Bowling, Mandalay Bay's president. Visitors seeking a taste of Manhattan cool may soon look to the old Bill's Gamblin' Hall & Saloon, which is being converted into Gansevoort Las Vegas (gansevoorthotelgroup.com). Known for its splashy urban environments, Gansevoort operates a pair of fashionable hotels in New York City, including a celebrated outpost in Manhattan's Meatpacking District. continued on page 136 VEGASMAGAZINE.COM 135-136_V_BOB_HP_Opener_Sept13.indd 135 135 8/5/13 7:39 PM
