TIME HONORED The Shape of Things to Covet INNOVATIVE WATCH BRANDS ARE LOOKING BACK IN ORDER TO KEEP IN STEP WITH WHAT THE MODERN VEGAS WOMAN WANTS. BY ROBERTA NAAS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF GALE W atchmakers, like any designers, often refer to their past for inspiration, wishing to blend their rich heritage with their modern creative vision. As Art Deco enjoys a returning moment in the spotlight—as seen in the blockbuster film The Great Gatsby, fine jewelry, and the new interior design of places like Tiffany at Bellagio—watchmakers are joining the party, with a renewed interest in unusual geometric case shapes, offered in updated designs. "We are building a watch for the future, for the past, and for now—a timeless piece that encompasses tradition and philosophy," says Hugues de Pins, president of Vacheron Constantin North America. For that reason, the company went back to its archives before it designed this year's new geometric tonneau-shaped ladies' Malte watch, based on a piece from 1912 and named for the Maltese Cross, Vacheron Constantin's symbol. Introducing a unique shape to the market requires additional research and development, new tooling, and multiple extra steps in production, which often translates into an additional six months or more (compared to a round case) before the watch becomes a reality. What's more, a new case shape requires newly shaped dials and crystals. For these reasons, such beguiling beauties generally command a slightly higher price than their circular counterparts and are often produced in limited numbers. And it's why so many brands adorn these special timepieces with diamonds and gemstones, adding to their timeless appeal. Indeed, while some may refer to these unusually shaped watches as new classics, they are really a blend of heritage and innovation—much like the city of Las Vegas.
