It's the place to be in this tuckedaway harbor. Buzzards Bay is one of the most interesting and hazardous bodies of water for boaters. Strong currents hum down the bay from the Cape Cod Canal, opposing a prevailing southwest breeze, creating treacherous rip currents and deep swells that can surprise even the most experienced crew. But just off the bay, along the coast of the Forbesfamily-owned Naushon Island, lies Hadley Harbor, a tranquil mooring field that in-the-know sailors hold dear. It's like a library on the sea—quiet and free. It's the kind of place you're likely to witness maritime magic like a passing school of striped bass leaping up around your boat, or a meteor shower in the night sky. Spending more time in Buzzards Bay is worth it. Anchor off Woods Hole for a lunch of lobster tacos, gazpacho, and churros in chocolate sauce followed by sangria on the deck of Quicks Hole, or tie up off Cuttyhunk and wait for the Floating Raw Bar to pull up beside your rig. Every night from 5:15 to 7:30 college kids serve Cuttyhunk Shellfish Farms's freshly harvested Cuttyhunk oysters and clams, as well as clam chowder. Opt to motor or sail through the Cape Cod Canal on your way to the most urban port along the coastline: Boston. Boston Harbor, with its many islands and freighters, offers plenty of navigational challenges, but the best ways into the 112 BOSTONCOMMON-MAGAZINE.COM 110-115_BC_HP_LongWeekend_SUM13.indd 112 harbor are along the left alley and through the Hull Gut, or via the shipping lane by Boston Light. The skyline is best seen from the water, day or night, especially on the approach to Rowes Wharf. Grab a coveted spot at The Marina at Rowes Wharf and you could be treated to live music or a movie as part of Boston Harbor Hotel at Rowes Wharf's 15th annual Summer in the City events. Dine alfresco at Rowes Wharf Sea Grille, which does creative takes on favorites from shore and sea, such as flash-fried calamari with a ginger mayo and kimchee salad, or diver scallops with a sweet corn cream—or head inside to Meritage, one of Boston's premier restaurants. If you're just staying for dinner, your slip is free of charge (with a receipt). But plan to stay overnight and you'll have access to all the amenities that this five-star hotel offers. Note that you're also a short walk to the ever-expanding Rose F. Kennedy Greenway and its colorful fountains, as continued on page 114 Rowes Wharf Sea Grille, 70 Rowes Wharf, 617-856-7744; roweswharfseagrille.com Meritage, 70 Rowes Wharf, 617-439-3995; meritage therestaurant.com KENNEBUNKPORT Chicks Marina, 75 Ocean Ave., 207-967-2782; chicksmarina.com • VHF Channels 09 and 68 • Yachts up to 150 feet • Complimentary coffee, sundeck • $4.50–$7.50/foot The Ramp Bar & Grill, 77 Pier Road, Cape Porpoise, Maine, 207-967-8500; pier77restaurant.com The White Barn Inn, 37 Beach Ave., Kennebunk Beach, Maine, 207-9672321; whitebarninn.com PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF BOSTON HARBOR HOTEL (HARBOR); CYNTHIA FARMER (ESSEX) In tranquil Hadley Harbor, you're likely to witness maritime magic like striped bass leaping up around your boat, or a meteor shower in the night sky.
