The BMC Racing Team drives the peloton in defense of the race leader, Tejay van Garderen (in yellow), during Stage 6 of the 2012 USA Pro Challenge from Golden to Boulder. George Hincapie competes in the final race of his career during the 2012 USA Pro Challenge. 142 Light Wait Former Masters and Pro 1-2 road racer Bill Emerson and product design engineer Neal Beidleman, both Roaring Fork Valley residents, founded Ultralite Sports, which revamps the typical road bicycle pedal. Manufactured in Colorado, Ultralite pedals feature a one-piece spindle with two independent barrels that secure to the cleat and cycling shoe. The 112-gram pedal system weighs at least 150 grams less than any other system on the market. The company offers two pedal models: the Cirrus TI (PICTURED, $395), made from titanium, and the Nimbus ST ($295), made from stainless steel. "Just like in a racecar, you want the components that are rotating to be light," says Bill Emerson. "Having light rotating pedals, helps you accelerate." Ultralite will have a booth at the 2013 USA Pro Challenge. Basalt Bike and Ski, 731 E.
