It was a shot heard across the world." Since then, Tao Group has continued its Vegas success with Tao Beach, the first dayclub in Vegas; Marquee, the first electronic music– only club in town, and its dayclub; and Lavo, an Italian restaurant and club that was the first Vegas-born nightlife venue to spin off somewhere else (New York). Now the group is focusing on the September opening of Manhattan's Tao Downtown, which will bring everything full circle. "We took cues from the bells and whistles that we've been able to create in Vegas," Strauss says. "There will be a restaurantlounge, but there will also be a private lounge as its own venue within the restaurant." Like the debut of its Vegas counterpart, it's safe to assume that the opening in Manhattan will be, as Strauss would say, "dramatic." celebration of Ashlee Simpson, but it wasn't prepared for the polite starlet to arrive early. So she waited outside and posed on the red carpet until the clock struck midnight—officially making her 21—on October 3, 2005, and she could legally enter the club. •JAY-Z CHOSE TAO for the grand finale to his Hangar Tour, which hit seven cities in 24 hours after kicking off in Atlanta. He reached Vegas in his G5 and was onstage by 4:30 AM on November 19 for a 10-song performance in front of a packed club of frenzied fans. Hova went on to play Tao four more times. •BRITNEY SPEARS FLUBBED the countdown as she rang in 2007 at Pure, then left the party early. •HE WAS FIRST: DJ Paul Oakenfold brought electronic dance music to the Strip by signing the contract for his pioneering "Perfecto" residency at Palms's nightclub Rain in August 2008. •ONE YEAR LATER, on August 28, Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein passed away, hours before he was supposed to spin there. In his honor, the P, L, and S on the Palms's marquee were darkened, leaving only AM. •MARQUEE OPENED AT Cosmopolitan on New Year's Eve 2010, with Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Kanye West, Coldplay, Gwyneth Paltrow, Alex Rodriguez, Cameron Diaz, Diddy, Blake Lively, Florence Welch, John Mayer, and Jennifer Lopez. The pre-club private performance by Jay-Z and Coldplay featured surprise cameos by Beyoncé, Mayer, and West. •OLYMPICS STUD RYAN Lochte and Brit playboy Prince Harry jumped into XS's pool, both in pants, for a 3 AM "swim-off" on August 19, 2012, before the royal's stay famously ended in a strip-billiards scandal. DJ AM, memorialized on the Palms's signage after his death, is still greatly missed in Vegas. Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte gets into the liquid spirit at Tao Beach. Chloe Wade, Olivia Munn, and Emmy Rossum celebrate the last day of 2010. Ashlee Simpson was watched closely by Gaming Control on her 21st birthday.
