PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF LANVIN Zip clutch ($1,270). But it was really about breathing some life into the store, about taking this very white space and filling it with the beauty of our blue boxes. I always work with my intuition, and I wanted to give Chicago this kind of emotion in the store, so people would feel more comfortable and not feel intimidated by it. Youre not buying luxury in a pharmacy; youre buying it in a home. Youll find Elbaz keen to reinterpret the idea of modern luxury throughout every aspect of Lanvin, starting with his runway collections and their artful mix of cut and drape. For spring, that translates to the cunning use of color blocking, as well as a deft hand with dresses that seem effortlessly spun from origami folds and panelsthough he also favors an overarching approach of pushing aside the traditional notions of the seasons on a fashion calendar. About four or five years ago I started doing capsule collections to change a little bit the way we shop because I just thought that todays new collection is tomorrows old collection, Elbaz explains before pointing to a travelfriendly grouping of easy (and easily packable) dresses, jackets, and yoga pants in jersey, or a childrens capsule collection that allows the Windy Citys wee ones to sport the luxe Lanvin aesthetic. A bridal capsule collectiona little corner with some stylish dresses in white or ivoryseems an especially good bet when one considers that, of the roughly two dozen friends and clients for whom Elbaz has designed custom bridal gowns over the years, every one of them has stayed married. Moving forward, that evolution will continue as Elbaz explores a greater emphasis on sepaMetallic rates, starting with the brushed calfskin Pre-Fall collection that stilleto will arrive on Oak ($1,150). A look from the mens Spring runway. Street in June, with its focus on luscious leathers in jackets and skirts as well as some standout Karlie Kloss in leopard prints, each rooted in a runway look from the Spring his desire to take the comfort collection. of American fashion and separates, but bring the know-how of French craft and fabrics and embroideries. Indeed, while Elbaz delights in changenever content to rest on his laurels, no matter what he exploresits certain he will weave it through personal notions of what works for Lanvin and what works for luxury. Because luxury has always been about the dream, hasnt it? And I am a dreamer, he says. The most important thing in our mtier is to be able to feel things; my job is to feel and to think and to mix between the two. Thats the essence of design. 116 E. Oak St., 312-765-7075; lanvin.com MA MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM 088-089_MA_SS_StyleSetter_Spring13.indd 89 89 2/11/13 4:06 PM
