SPIRIT OF GENEROSITY good sports UNDER THE STEWARDSHIP OF TEAM CO-OWNER LAURA RICKETTS, CHICAGO CUBS CHARITIES IS MAKING POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE LIVES OF YOUNG CHICAGOANS. W hen my family took ownership of the Cubs in 2009, we established three priorities to guide our efforts as a team. The first is to bring the World Series Championship to Chicago and all its fans. The second is to improve and preserve Wrigley Field for generations to come. The third is to be a good neighbor and help build and strengthen our community. For my family and the entire organization, the third priority is just as important as the first two. In the past three years, we have doubled our charitable givingin 2012 alone, we gave more than $2.3 million dollars to organizations in the Chicago area. Weve also broadened the scope of our giving throughout Chicagoland. Weve helped more than 130,000 children, young adults, and others through our support of partner charities. So what does Chicago Cubs Charities do? Our mission is to support neighborhood organizations and encourage health, fitness, and education to at-risk youth. Many of the organizations we support, like Girls in the Game and Urban Initiatives Work to Play, are sports-related; our Chicago Cubs RBI boys and girls clubs provide opportunities to play ball for nearly 300 youth, and this year 11 RBI participants were offered college baseball scholarships these are inner-city youth that might not otherwise have the opportunity to receive those scholarships. Working with sports-related organizations is an obvious partnership, but its not all we do. Last year we dedicated a Cubs classroom at the new Ann & Robert H. Lurie Childrens Hospital, and we also support Chicago Public continued on page 66 We really try to be champions both on and off the field. PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP; HAIR AND MAKEUP BY MAYA PUENTES FOR FORD ARTISTS Last year Chicago Cubs Charities gave more than $2.3 million to neighborhood organizations across Chicagoland. LAURA RICKETTS 64 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM 064-067_MA_SP_SpiritofGen_Spring13.indd 64 2/11/13 4:28 PM
