...WITHOUT WHOM THIS ISSUE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WINTER 2013 kari molvar Kari Molvar, a regular contributor to style.com, wrote our feature on the distinctive scents of Las Vegas casino resorts. What intrigued you about the latest scent technologies? It's so interesting how the concept of scenting a space began in Vegas, and now it's become this huge trend in other cities. I might have been naïve, but I really believed that aroma of freshly baked cinnamon buns swirling around malls was real—not so, as I learned in my interviews. And the casino scents, did that surprise you, too? I guess not. Every detail is so carefully considered in a casino, from the lighting to the temperature of a room. bret love Bret Love, who wrote our Desert Patrol story on Lydia Ball, edits for Georgia Music and INsite magazines, and is the editor-in-chief of greenglobaltravel.com. How much of an impact will Lydia Ball have? In the short-term, perhaps not much, Fulbright scholar, writer, and educator DawnMichelle Baude wrote our feature story on Las Vegas art collectors. You've lived all over; what brings you to Vegas? I love the deserts of Africa and the Middle East, so when I joined my beloved here, I knew I'd feel at home. Deserts excite my imagination and give me the space to dream. What impressed you most about our local collectors? They are like collectors in Geneva and New York, but here they take their social responsibility to give back to the community very seriously. Where do you like to go to see art in Vegas? I follow VAST Space Projects, the Cosmopolitan artists-in-residence, 5th Wall Gallery in Emergency Arts, and the galleries in the arts district. What's next for you? I'm always working on a book: finish one, start another. I have more ideas for books than I have time to write! 20 evan sung Evan Sung, who photographed David Yurman for our Style Setter page, is a Brooklyn-based food, fashion, and lifestyle photographer, and a regular contributor to The New York Times and Vogue. How was the shoot with David Yurman? I've photographed many designers in their offices or studios, and they've always got a million things going on at once. David was no different, and there was a kind of rollicking energy to him. Have you done photo shoots in Las Vegas? Yes. The town is a fascinating slice of life, but it was truly inspiring to rent a car and drive out to the amazing natural scenery that surrounds Las Vegas. PHOTOGRAPHY BY EVAN SUNG (SUNG), SHANNON JENKINS/OFFHAND PHOTOGRAPHY (LOVE), SHANE O'NEAL (BAUDE) dawn-michelle baude but sustainability is a long-term investment. Getting the welcome sign lit by solar power is a baby step, but it's a hugely symbolic one. Why is it important to you? This planet is the only one we have, and I'd like to keep it healthy for as long as humanly possible. The Earth does not belong to us, but to our grandchildren's grandchildren.
